Penny Pincher Spends Sleepless Night

We have been away for a few days as my husband had a job interview out of town. Our expenses were paid for travel and hotel...and a much nicer hotel than we would normally stay. Still, for all the money that this high-priced hotel makes, they charged about $10 for internet access. Yes, just to make a wireless connection with my own laptop I would have had to pay $10 a night...we've never had that happen in the motels we've stayed in in the past that were about 1/3 of the cost of this place. So I took a break from blogging and surfing the net.

One night we did something we hope never to do again...we didn't plan where we would stay for the night in advance...which isn't the worst thing, sometimes that can be fun, you travel and just stop wherever you wish, but in the State we were visiting, when it came time to get a room, we were tired, and all the hotels in the area were running over $100 a night because of a concert in the area. SO, we ended up finding an old, run-down motel, and staying there for the night...a night in a supposedly smokeless room that smelled like cigarettes, with cigarette burns on the blankets, and cracks in the walls and tiles in the bathroom...a somewhat sleepless night wondering whether or not there were bed bugs, or any other bugs that would crawl into bed with me during the night. Oh yeh, we saved a lot of pennies, and some would say that it was worth it...but I can't help but think that for the price we paid, if we had just looked a little further, we would have found something nicer for the same price.

So at least have an idea whether or not there's a big event in the area before you decide where you're going to sleep for the night. I think in the future we'll consider looking into places like Extended Stay Hotels where they have suites as low as $46.99 a night

We had an experience like this, we called it the "Roach Motel." We didn't see any roaches, but we slept with one eye open. Haha!

Oh,man, I remember many motel rooms we stopped at on our family road trips when I was a kid. Boy, what an adventure of broken down ratty rooms to fancy-schmancy motels with pools!

That was my idea of luxury when I was a kid - a swimming pool just outside the motel room door, lol.

Now I judge by quality and speed of room service, lol.
